A super simple explanation of evolution.
Evolution started out as an
observation which is thousands of years old. From this obervation Alfred Russel
Wallace and Charles Darwin developed a new theory about how species originate.
The observation was that there seemed to be close physical similarities between
various species that looked like they were related one to the other.
The observation of course was correct. The animals did look like close
relatives.
Based on this simple observation Darwin came up with the idea that maybe all
life on the planet is related to what came before it.
But there was a problem. At this time people did not know any method by which
one species could transorm into another, so it was just a theory.
What was needed to prove this theory was a method by which physical traits could
be passed from one generation to the other.
The discovery of DNA was the first proof of this theory. For the first time it
could be shown that there was a method by which the details of an animal's
structure could be passed into future generations.
Another thing needed to prove Darwin's theory was a process by which the
physical structure of a species could change naturaly over time to transform it
into an entirely new species. This was also thought to be impossible at the
time.
Again DNA proved this point. The theory of evolution was right on both points.
It turns out that when DNA is copied to create new cells the results are not
perfect. There are always minor errors in the copy which can then be passed on
to future generations.
If Darwin were alive he would no doubt be content that he had gotten that much
right in his research. Evolution is 100% proven to be possible.
So how do we know if evolution actually happened?
Well its simple. We already know that DNA changes all by itself, so animals
have no choice but to change. The question is why would they change into
anything so well designed to survive long enough to pass on their DNA to the
next generation?
The answer is they dont.
DNA makes bad copies. These copies either gives the animal an advantage to
survive, gives it a disadvantage, or does not hurt its chances and still gets
passed on.
We do not see the bad results because they always die out. All we see are the
survivors, so we assume that it must be the result of a plan.
The idea in one sentence is: If you have a replicator that makes imperfect
copies of itself, in an environment that allows only some of them to survive,
then evolution simply MUST happen.
